I can remember as a young man listening to George Jones playing on 8 tracks and vinyl. It wasn’t me playing the music, it was everyone else it seemed. The guy was HUGE and destined for huge things no doubt.
It took me many years to realize that he was indeed a gifted entertainer/songwriter. I don’t think the world will soon forget how much of an impact he had on us all.
Waylon Jennings once wrote a song that said, “George might show up flyin’ high, if George shows up at all/But he may be, unconsciously, the greatest of them all.”
In a statement today, Merle Haggard said, “The world has lost the greatest country singer of all time. Amen.”
Jones, a member of the Country Music Hall of Fame, was honored by the Kennedy Center in 2008 and received a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award in 2012.
